Verzo Kinzo unboxing and impressions

Yes, the Verzo Kinzo is real! That Americano-Czech Android smartphone with mid-range specs that went on sale in November with a ludicrous $459 price tag only to be hastily relaunched earlier this month for a slightly more digestible $359 is not a giant farce. (Well, maybe it is.) It left the ethereal world of rendered computer graphics and landed in our mitts just in time for the holidays. To be specific, we received the pricier $384 Verzo Kinzo Plus GPS package, which includes a voucher for Sygic's off-line navigation app and a gaudy, Star Trek-inspired carholder. After spending a few days with the handset we are able to report that it isn't particularly impressive in this day and age but isn't completely horrible either -- not to mention the faux-Vertu packaging and branding which are rather, well... unique. So why not grab some leftover eggnog, and join us after the break for our unboxing and impressions?

Thailand and Cambodia to withdraw troops from disputed temple

By BNO News

PHNOM PENH (BNO NEWS) -- Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to withdraw their troops from the area surrounding the disputed Preah Vihear temple, the Thai MCOT news agency reported on Thursday.

The two countries agreed to implement the International Court of Justice's (ICJ) order to establish a "provisional demilitarized zone." A joint working group will be set up to oversee troop withdrawals from the newly defined demilitarized zone, Cambodian Defense Minister Tea Banh said after meeting with Thai Defense Minister Gen Yutthasak Sasiprapa in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh.

Gen Tea Banh also said the withdrawal of troops will be carried out as soon as possible. It will be done under the supervision of the joint observers from Thailand, Cambodia and Indonesia, the chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

In July, a ruling by the Hague-based International Court of Justice asked both nations to withdraw military personnel from around the Preah Vihear temple complex.

Both Cambodia and Thailand claim the 4.6 square kilometer (1.7 square miles) area near the ancient Preah Vihear temple on their shared border, which has never been formally established. However, the military tension has eased since former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's Pheu Thai Party won a landslide victory in July's general election.

Tensions first escalated between the two countries in July 2008 following the build-up of military forces near the 900-year-old Preah Vihear temple. The United Nations Security Council urged both sides to establish a permanent ceasefire after at least 10 people were killed.

Clashes resumed earlier this year as both nations claim the lands surrounding the ancient Hindu Temple, which has been damaged due to the conflict. The Preah Vihear temple dates back to the 11th century.

Japan to take over two thirds stake in Tepco: report (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? The Japanese government plans to take a stake of more than two-thirds in Tokyo Electric Power Co (9501.T) in a de facto nationalization of the operator of the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant, the Yomiuri newspaper said on Wednesday.

Sources said this month that the government may inject about $13 billion into Asia's biggest utility as early as next summer in a de facto nationalization.

The Yomiuri also reported that the government is looking at injecting 1 trillion yen ($12.7 billion), and added that banks will be asked to provide 1 trillion yen in loans, citing sources familiar with the matter.

A Tepco spokeswoman said the report was not factual.

Tepco's future as an independent firm has been in doubt since an earthquake and tsunami wrecked the plant in March, triggering the world's worst nuclear crisis in 25 years and leaving it with huge compensation payments and clean-up costs.

The Yomiuri said full-scale negotiations for the government to acquire classified stock in Tepco, a category that includes preferred shares, will begin next year, with related parties aiming to complete them by next March.

Tepco would need to get shareholder approval to raise the ceiling on the number of shares it can issue at its next annual meeting in June.

Last Friday, Japan declared a cold shutdown at the disaster-hit Fukushima Daiichi plant, but it still faces a massive cleanup task at the nuclear complex located 240 km (150 miles) northeast of Tokyo.

Decommissioning four reactors at the plant is set to cost at least 1.2 trillion yen, a sum that would render the power company insolvent if drastic measures to shore up its financial base were not taken, media reports have said.

Tepco is holding a meeting later on Wednesday about its roadmap for decommissioning the plant.

Shares in Tepco fell 6 percent in early morning trade, versus an 1.5 percent rise in the benchmark Nikkei 225 (.N225).

Former LEO Weekly Editor to be Yarmuth Communications Director

by Phillip M. Bailey on December 5, 2011

U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth, D-Ky., has hired former LEO Weekly editor Stephen George as his new communications director.

A Louisville-native, George served as editor of the alt-weekly newspaper for two years and briefly worked for Yarmuth, who founded LEO in 1990, as a staff writer. The congressman sold the newspaper in 2003, but remained with the publication as a columnist until he announced his bid for Congress in 2006.

George will replace Trey Pollard, who has accepted the position of deputy press secretary for the national Sierra Club. After leaving LEO Weekly, George served as editor of the Nashville City Paper and wrote about political and government for the Nashville Scene.

He left that position to become press secretary for U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper, D-Tn., where he has served for the past three months.

George?s first day will be December 12.
